Symptoms of a Burn Injury

Justin SheldonJanuary 21, 2022

There are many causes of burn injuries and there are a variety of treatments available to help victims recover. The first step is to stop the burn. The injured area should be covered with a clean, dry bandage or cloth. In addition, the body part should be elevated above the heart. If the burn is deeper than the initial layer of skin, it may need to be treated with an artificial skin product or laboratory-grown epidermis. A physician should be consulted as soon as possible.

Severe burns can have devastating consequences. In addition to extensive damage to the skin, a person can sustain internal injuries and even be left with permanent scarring. In severe cases, the patient may need amputation. Medical care can be expensive, and many burn victims require rehabilitation, physical therapy, and counseling. First-degree burns, which are the most common, affect the outermost layer of skin. In severe cases, the burned area can reach deep layers of the dermis and affect the muscles, joints, and bones. Typically, first-degree burns are treated with topical analgesics and rest.
