Breit Biniazan is actively investigating medical malpractice claims involving Dr. Sasa Grae Espino, a former Richmond-area breast surgeon who permanently surrendered her Virginia medical license on July 1, 2026. We are speaking with women who underwent breast reconstruction, breast reduction, mastectomy, and related breast surgeries that may have been unnecessary or performed below the accepted standard of care.
What we are hearing from women is deeply concerning. Patients who sought help for a collapsed implant, breast pain, or reduction surgery describe being advised to undergo far more invasive procedures, including preventative double mastectomies with reconstruction. Some now live with permanent scarring, asymmetry, infection complications, and the emotional toll of losing healthy tissue they believe did not need to be removed.
If you or someone you love was treated by Dr. Espino and have questions about whether your surgery was medically indicated, this is the time to get answers. Contact Breit Biniazan at (855) 659-4457 to discuss your next steps.
UPDATE – July 2, 2026: On July 1, 2026, Dr. Sasa Grae Espino permanently surrendered her Virginia medical license following disciplinary proceedings by the Virginia Board of Medicine. The action followed findings involving the care and treatment of two former patients and comes as dozens of medical malpractice lawsuits remain pending against Dr. Espino. According to a CBS 6 Richmond investigation published July 2, 2026, the Board concluded Dr. Espino violated regulations governing the practice of medicine, although the consent order states she neither admitted nor denied the findings. Our firm continues to investigate claims on behalf of women who underwent breast reconstruction, breast reduction, mastectomy, and related procedures performed by Dr. Espino.
Preventative Double Mastectomy Allegations Involving Dr. Sasa Grae Espino
Our firm is reviewing claims involving women who underwent preventative double mastectomies after being told they faced a high likelihood of developing breast cancer.
In at least one case, a patient sought care for a collapsed implant and left with a recommendation for complete removal of both breasts. She later learned that her prior genetic testing did not show mutations commonly associated with increased cancer risk, and subsequent review of her imaging did not reveal abnormalities that would typically warrant risk-reducing mastectomy.
We are investigating whether:
- Patients were fully informed of non-surgical options such as monitoring
- The statistical risk of cancer was clearly explained
- Second opinions were encouraged
- Reconstruction procedures were performed by a surgeon without plastic surgery board certification
A double mastectomy is irreversible. It carries physical risk and lifelong emotional impact. The law requires that patients receive accurate information and that surgery be medically appropriate under accepted standards of care.
If you underwent a double mastectomy in the Richmond area and are now questioning whether it was necessary, contact Breit Biniazan for a confidential consultation.
Breast Reduction and Reconstruction Complications Reported by Richmond Patients
We are also representing and speaking with women who underwent breast reduction or reconstruction procedures performed by Dr. Espino and later experienced serious complications.
These reports include infections, wound breakdown, burst sutures, implant migration, uneven breast size, loss of nipple tissue, and the need for additional corrective surgeries. Some women describe being high-risk patients whose complications may not have been properly addressed in the days and weeks following surgery.
Breast reconstruction and complex reduction procedures are typically performed by board-certified plastic surgeons with specialized training in aesthetic and reconstructive techniques. When a surgeon performs procedures beyond the scope of their training or experience, patients can suffer the consequences.
If you are now facing corrective reconstruction after a surgery performed by Dr. Espino, we want to hear your story to begin holding negligent surgeons accountable for their actions.
Unnecessary Breast Surgery and Medical Malpractice in Virginia
Not every bad outcome is malpractice. Surgery involves risk and healing can be unpredictable. But unnecessary surgery is different.
If a physician recommends removing healthy tissue without sufficient medical basis, fails to present reasonable alternatives, or performs procedures outside accepted standards, that may give rise to a medical malpractice claim.
Warning signs that your breast surgery may not have been medically necessary include:
- Being told cancer was almost certain despite negative genetic testing
- Learning later that another surgeon would not have recommended mastectomy
- Undergoing multiple revision surgeries due to preventable complications
- Discovering the surgeon was not board-certified in plastic surgery for reconstruction procedures
Virginia law allows injured patients to pursue compensation for medical expenses, future corrective care, lost wages, physical pain, emotional distress, and permanent disfigurement. There are strict time limits for filing these claims, so speaking with counsel sooner rather than later is important.
