Breit Biniazan associate, Attorney Kevin Biniazan, has been honored as a member of the 2020 class of “Up and Coming” lawyers!

This awards program, now in its fifth year, recognizes lawyers across the commonwealth who are making their mark within their first 10 years of practice. These are the lawyers who are the leaders of the profession in the future. Virginia Lawyers Weekly evaluates “Up and Coming” nominees on their professional success and contributions to both the legal and local community.

Kevin grew up in Tempe, Arizona as the youngest child of three. His parents immigrated to the United States from Iran in the 1970s, met in college in Arizona, and built a family there. As a first-generation American, Kevin grew up with a great sense of gratitude and an enormous sense of purpose. He has always been grateful for the courage it took his parents to move across the world, the courage to face prejudice and racially or ethnically insensitive treatment, and the perseverance to build a new life in a foreign country. Stories of their hardship put his childhood in perspective and fueled him with an enormous sense of purpose to prove to them that it was all worth it.

Kevin joined Breit Biniazan (formally Breit Cantor) in 2017 after graduating from the College of William & Mary’s Law School. Never shy to take a case to trial, Kevin has won a successful verdict in over 75% of the cases he’s presented to jurors. On average, these verdicts exceeded the final settlement offers by more than five times. Between jury trials and settlements, Kevin secured more than $15 million for his clients in his first two years of practice.

While Kevin has enjoyed success in the courtroom, he describes his two jury trial losses as his most humbling experience as a lawyer. As someone who strongly believes a trial lawyer can alter the outcome of a case, he found that it was easy to be self-critical as he spent countless hours replaying portions of the trials back in his head wondering what questions he could have or should have asked; what he could have or should have said in opening or closing argument; or what he could have or should have changed about his overall presentation of the case. Through that process, he learned from his mistakes, but more importantly, through conversations with mentors, he learned to accept that some outcomes and results are outside of the lawyer’s control. It is easy to take the credit when things go well, but much more difficult to carry the blame when things don’t turn out as planned.

“We work in an outcome driven profession, but the best way to control or impact the outcome is to prepare and perform to the best of our abilities, which is also the best way to stay emotionally level through the ups and downs,” states Attorney Kevin Biniazan.

In addition to his impressive work in the courtroom, Kevin is a member of the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Virginia and is deeply involved with American Association of Justice and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association serving on the Board of Governors for both organizations. honorees will be celebrated at a virtual honors ceremony to be webcast on October 22, 2020. Congratulations to Kevin on this well-deserved honor!
