Salem’s desire to become a lawyer is rooted in her family’s immigration case, which had a profound impact on her life. The pro bono assistance of an attorney in Washington, D.C. enabled Salem and her family to attain citizenship in 2018, inspiring Salem to become an advocate for others facing similar challenges.

Beyond her legal pursuits, Salem enjoys baking shows, hiking, and spending quality time with family and friends. Her commitment to both her profession and personal interests highlights her multifaceted and compassionate nature.

A Dedicated Advocate

Salem used her time in law school to work several internships that have provided her with extensive experience in various aspects of law. Her dedication to justice was evident during her role as a Martin Luther King, Jr. Certified Legal Intern with the Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network/Legal Aid of Southeastern P.A. Here, Salem represented indigent parents in dependency proceedings and provided support to victims seeking protection from abuse in civil court.

Salem further honed her legal skills as a Judicial Intern for The Hon. Judge Raymond A. Jackson, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia. In this role, she contributed to the drafting and revision of memoranda opinions and orders for various motions in civil and criminal cases, showcasing her legal research and writing abilities.

As a Fellow in the Legal Practice Program, Salem served as a teaching assistant for first-year courses on legal writing, research, and lawyering skills. Her dedication to the education and mentorship of future legal professionals was evident as she taught and graded Bluebook citations and organized lawyering skills simulations.

Salem’s commitment to public service continued during her time as a Legal Intern at the Newport News Public Defender’s Office. Here, she conducted crucial legal research and attended various court proceedings, gaining invaluable experience in criminal defense.

Salem’s passion for immigration law shone through her role as a Legal Research Assistant at the Immigration Clinic at William & Mary Law School. Her work included researching country conditions for defensive asylum applications and translating pro se resources from English to Amharic, showcasing her dedication to serving diverse communities.
